Reconstruction
Lincoln had a plan to rebuild the south. This plan was known as the 10% Plan. It gave amnesty to anyone who pledged allegience to America, and those people had to admit that slavery was illegal. It also included that states had to revise their leadership and constitutions. His last step was to keep union troops in the south so they wouldn't get out of line again. Lincoln's Assasination- 1865
Lincoln was assasinated at Ford's Theatre and Andrew Johnson became president shortly after. Johnson was from the South and because of this he sided with the South many times. Johnson was also the one revising the states' constitutions and laws and because of this the South got away with more things.
Freedmen's Bureau- 1865
Congress established Freedmen's Bureau. It provided relief for freedpeople and certain poor people in the South. It ws the nations's first welfare. Because of Freedmen's Bureau, free slaves could survive in our world.
Black Codes- 1866
Every southern state passed Black Codes. Black Codes limited the freedom of African Americans. Because of Black Codes, African Americans had to have work contracts, proof of employment, they couldn't rent, and they weren't allowed to have guns.
14th Amendment- 1866
The fourteenth amendment was created for the fear that the Civil Rights Act might be overturned. It stated that all people in America, besides Native Americans, have equal rights. Because of this amendment, states' could not deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without being taken to trial.
Ku Klux Klan- 1866
A group of white southerners from Tennessee created the Ku Klux Klan. It was a secret society that opposed civil rights for African Americans. Because of the Ku Klux Klan many African Americans were assaulted and possibly killed.
15th Amendment- 1869
The fifteenth amendment was created to protect the reconstruction plan. This amendment gave African American men the right to vote. Because of the fifteenth amendment it almost wrapped up the reconstruction.
